How and why did Mao Zedong and the Communists come to power in China, and what were the implications of their triumph for the Cold War?
Historyy questionn pleasee help?ariel
Mao Zedong and the Communists took over in China about 1949. China had been devastated (at least the major cities had been) by WWII. The cities had been bombed or burned out, leaders had been killed, poverty was rampant (it still is), and the Russians were promoting Communism in every country throughout Europe and Asia that was in the throes of major changes due to post-war conditions. China had a civil war with Mao and the Communists on one side and Chaing Kai-shek on the other.
The triumph of Mao, and his alliance with the USSR, made Communism the dominant form of government of half the Northern Hemisphere, and an example of an alternative form of government for many emerging nations in Africa and Central and South America who equated the democracies of Western Europe and America with Imperialism, and the cause of their economic problems.
