That would be the hundreds of college students who protested an unpopular war back in the late 60's and early 70's, eh? Their actions were laughed at and they were scorned but they had a huge impact on ending the war in Vietnam (and saving hundres of lives in the process).

The Haymarket Riot which took place in 1886 in Chicago, Illinois, would fit the bill, I think.

The riot and its aftermath had an impact on labor and the creation of labor unions. The pardoning of some of the rioters ruined the political career of John Peter Altgelt, who was looked on by some as a hero for what he did (see Vachel Lindsay's poem "The Eagle That Is Forgotten")
