Don't have a compressor, do manual floor nailers (for putting down 3/4 hardwood fooring - Bruce Brazilian Cherry) work in an acceptable manner vs. the powered ones? I have never put down a wooden floor in before, will I triumph, or will I end up ripping it out and hiring someone to do it?

If you use a manual nailer, your forearms will be falling off before you get finished. It would be wise to rent a compressor with the nailer.

Rent a compressor from Lowe's or home depot. It will be a much better job, the joints will be nice and tight
